CREC’s Academy of Aerospace and Engineering and the Greater Hartford Academy
of Math and Science, in collaboration with the Connecticut Computer Science
Teachers Association (CTCSTA – www.ctcsta.org
), invite middle and high school boys and girls to two special STEM programs both being held on December 9th at the AAE Campus . The two programs are Women in STEM-C and Minority Boys Code
Women in STEM-C promises to be a
fun and engaging event to promote STEM education for girls and highlight the role Computer Science plays in
supporting all fields of endeavor in our digital world. Girls will work in teams to participate in activities in the areas of Chemistry, Engineering, Microbiology and
Computer Science. The activities will support teamwork, planning and lateral thinking. This event is inspired by a similar event hosted by female students from Connecticut College who created the Women in Science program to show high school girls how to enjoy themselves while applying the basic themes of science in a practical and experimental context. Previous year’s events can be seen at https://sites.google.com/site/womeninstemc/home .
The Second event is the Minority Boys Code
day. The Minority Boys Code event is to excite boys to see that
they need Computer Science and to recognize that they need to learn how to
program a computer. It promises to be a fun, engaging and empowering
event to promote Computer Science for boys and highlight the role Computer
Science plays in supporting all fields of endeavor in our digital world. Boys will work in teams to participate in activities that support teamwork, planning and lateral thinking.
While doing team challenges they will build interpersonal, communication and
collaborative skills and persevere in problem solving. The website to find out more information https://sites.google.com/site/mboyscode/home.
