About the Academy of Aerospace
The Academy of Aerospace and Engineering is a 6 - 12 Magnet school with distinct middle school (6-8) and high school (9-12) programs that build upon each other to help students gain skills and unique experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) that prepare them for college and high-demand professional careers. Our diverse student body comes from more than 42 cities and towns in the Greater Hartford area, representing urban, suburban, and rural districts.
Building on Greater Hartford’s strong engineering, aerospace, and other STEM industries, the Academy provides students with unique, hands-on professional experiences and the confidence to succeed. The ability to make connections between mathematics and science empowers students with knowledge, intellectual curiosity and motivation that extend beyond the classroom.
AAE Middle School a Strong Foundation
Middle School: 7:30 am - 2:15 pm
In Grades 6-8, students explore the Academy’s themes through field trips, guest speakers, activities in core curriculum subjects and projects related to all aspects of aerospace, engineering, biomedical sciences and the STEM professions.
Middle School Special Features
Middle school students participate in a variety of specialized classes that introduce them to the basics of engineering and help them to develop the success skills of rigorous problem solving, persistence and teamwork.
Project Based Learning is featured in many of our required middle school classes including Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering, Digital Graphics, Essentials Projects and Sound Engineering. In these classes students learn to work with Autodesk Computer Aided Design software, Vex-Robotics, Adobe Suite CS5 and our 3d printer
Middle school students are given numerous experiences in programs where they can interact with a variety of professionals and see the “real world” of engineering. Among these programs are the Kaman 8th grade mentorship, the Birken Aerospace Manufacturing Exploratory, the Aerospace Components Manufacturers Workforce Fair and New England Air Museum visits.
Students are also encouraged to discover the higher education possibilities through engineering exploratory programs through the University of Connecticut, University of Hartford, St. Francis University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Academy of Aerospace and Engineering High School - Real-World Applications
High School 7:30 am - 2:15 pm
High school students pair advanced math and science classes with industry internships focused on their area of interest and future careers in Aerospace, Engineering, Biomedicine, Advanced Mathematics and Science.
Special Features
Freshman and sophomores take two sciences and one math each year. Freshman take physics and earth science and sophomores take chemistry and biology. Freshman and sophomore math options include Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Pre-calculus.
Students interact with professionals in their fields of interest who serve as guest speakers, mentors and tutors. Elective courses include electronics, quantum mechanics, nuclear chemistry, computer science and engineering design.
State-of-the-art laboratories for research on cell cultures, lasers/photonics, molecular genetics, robotics/electronics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), botanical studies, forensic science, and nuclear physics
Students have the opportunity to take advanced courses in Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Nuclear Physics, Thermodynamics, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics, and Pharmacology.
Advanced placement courses include Biology, Chemistry, Classical Mechanics (Physics C), Electricity and Magnetism (Physics C), Calculus AB and BC, Statistics and Computer Science.
Students can earn 8-12 college credits of science and 4-6 college credits of mathematics in their four years at the academy.
